The Webinar Blog: Disconnecting A Second Phone Line

I have two separate phone lines in my office on different numbers. One is my primary phone used for webinars or business calls and the second phone handles backup communications, fax, and personal calls. When working a webinar, I need to make sure the second line does not ring while I am talking on the primary line.

I tried various solutions. I can lift the receiver, but then I also need to disconnect the handset from the phone body so I don?t end up hearing the phone company?s beep-beep warning tone in the background. Or I can disconnect the cord between the phone and the wall. Inevitably I forget that it was disconnected and wonder why I am not getting any calls. Plus I have to make sure the cord doesn?t drop down behind the desk.

But now I use a simple hardware switch. It?s called The TRICK (Telephone Remote Interrupt Control Kit) and you can buy it from Amazon at http://amzn.com/B003VKRE6Y

The device couldn?t be simpler. You plug the wall cord into the switch and run another cable between the switch and your phone to complete the connection. There is a simple metal joystick toggle sticking out of the plastic switch body. With the toggle in one direction the phone is connected to the wall. In the other direction the phone is disconnected. And there is a label on the device with green and red arrows for ON and OFF.

It comes with the second cable and a self-stick patch so you can mount the switch in a convenient location. I use it all the time and love the convenience and the visual indication of which state the phone is in. Certainly not rocket science, but I was happy to pay $15 for the easy solution.
