The plane is?presumed crashed, although Russia's official RIA-Novosti agency said that darkness and fog have prevented search teams from reaching the site where the plane is believed to have gone down during a demonstration flight near Mt. Salak, about 50 miles from Jakarta.

The SuperJet, a half-dozen copies of which are already serving with two Russian airlines, is supposed to replace the fleets of aging Soviet-era Tupolev, Antonov, and Yakovlev mid-range aircraft that serve hundreds of far-flung regional routes across Russia and which have?suffered a rash of catastrophic accidents in recent years.?The situation became so bad last year that then-President Dmitry Medvedev ordered two regional workhorses, the Tupolev Tu-134 and the Antonov An-24,?to be permanently grounded.

Great hopes have been invested in the SuperJet, which was developed by Russia's famous producer of fighter planes,?Sukhoi, with input from several top Western aviation firms, including Boeing, Snecma, and Honeywell. The plane meets all the latest global aviation standards, and production models should be able to carry almost 100 passengers with an operating range of up to 2,500 miles, which makes it an ideal replacement for a wide range of?troubled Soviet aircraft?on Russia's multitude of outback routes.

There are also high hopes that the plane might do well on international markets, particularly in Asia, where its $35 million price tag makes it a tough competitor for similar-sized jets produced by the Canadian Bombardier Inc. and the Brazilian Embraer SA.

The SuperJet, which has sailed through testing and certification, has also been relatively accident-free in its development stages. The only serious mishap so far occurred in March, when a SuperJet operated by Aeroflot was forced to abandon a flight from Moscow to the Caspian city of Astrakhan due to problems with its undercarriage. Airline officials said passengers were never in danger.

But Russia's airline industry has been hit with a series of scandals, including revelations that many engineers working in aircraft factories have inadequate or fake diplomas.?

Many Russians can recall, often with a shudder, how a catastrophic crash of the Soviet Union's "Concordski" Tu-144 supersonic jetliner?at the Paris air show in 1973?destroyed the USSR's reputation as a worthy competitor of the West in aviation. Vice President for Finance Doug Anderson said that the university came up with the first $2.5 million by leaving positions open rather than hiring, among other things.
?We have utilized a number of ways to adjust our resource use [expenses] to stay in line with the expected revenue [income],? Anderson wrote in an e-mail.
The Budget Advisory Committee, which is composed of the vice presidents of Hamline and several faculty representatives, is currently working on the decision of where to find the money. Although Reynolds said the two groups in the committee might not always agree on where the money should come from, they have made one important agreement.
?The overall goal is to determine the good of the university,? Reynolds said.
According to Anderson, the Budget Advisory Committee is currently meeting once a week to discuss Hamline?s financial situation. He said the community has also had opportunities to take part in the discussions during faculty meetings and finance forms.
Reynolds said the committee is mulling over several different options for the remaining $1 million. These include furloughs, or temporary unpaid leaves, 10 percent cuts across the board for every department and early retirement plans. In fact, Reynolds said money has already been budgeted for fiscal year 2013 based on how many faculty members Hamline believes will accept the offer of early retirement. He also said, however, he does not think professors will end up with a bigger course load, which was an issue raised at the annual Conversation with the President in March.
Faculty, for the most part, are reacting well to the budget cuts, Reynolds said. Although they are upset with the fact that Hamline is again having financial difficulty, he said there is a spirit of community as well. Where one might expect to find competition among departments, Reynolds said each one is doing its part to make sure no one loses staff members.
?Everyone comes to the table and says, ?How do we make this work??? Reynolds said.
Despite the efforts, however, Reynolds said he does not believe the cuts will prevent terminations within the CLA.
?Firing is likely to occur regardless. The goal is just to minimize it,? Reynolds said.
Anderson did not wish to comment on whether or not terminations will occur.

Matachek said the reorganization of the BAC should be complete by the end of this year.

When Skylar Laine was sent packing on last week's "American Idol," it was a shock to many. After all, in her run to the top five, she'd always been consistently good (and occasionally great), and, really, with some lesser contestants remaining (cough, Hollie, cough), it truly didn't seem like it was her time to head home.

Still, to hear her tell it, Laine wasn't surprised to be voted off the show, and she thinks consistency had a lot to do with it. Then again, she'll also admit that it was also her biggest asset too.

"My struggle was my strength at the same time: I always made the song country, and I got a lot of flak for it," she told MTV News on Monday (May 7). "I'd watch my YouTube videos back, and I'd read some of the comments, which you're not supposed to — but that is your voters and that is your fans, so you want to know what they think — and a lot of them would be like, 'Oh, all she can sing is county,' and I'm like, 'No, I sang a Lady Gaga song, I did Soul Train [week], but anything I sing is going to sound country.'

"So that was my struggle and my strength, knowing that I want everything I sing to be country," she continued. "But people don't understand that, while I'm doing different songs, they're going to sound country. Just like when Phillip [Phillips] sings a song, it's going to have that raspy sound."

And true to her words, Laine said she's going to remain country to the core in her post-"Idol" career — she's already making plans to move from Mississippi to Nashville to record her debut album — but with a few weeks off before hitting the road with her fellow contestants, her plans are much simpler: She can't wait to head home and just enjoy herself.

"This will be the first time I've been home since February, and I just really want to spend some time with my family and friends," she said. "I'm so excited, you don't even know! I want to go all around Brandon and see all my friends and hang out at the car wash, sit on the tailgate of the truck and just talk to people. I just want to be a regular kid for a couple of days; a regular 18-year-old in Brandon, Mississippi."

Sony Smartwatch SDK update adds open source music player and puzzle game extensions

Still wishing for some more functionality on Sony's touch-friendly watch? Well there's good news if you're into slider puzzles and music playing apps, as both of these have arrived open source in the SmartWatch's latest SDK. The music extension will allow devs to start work on their own music player, already including support for Android's generic music player. The 8 Game extension doesn't elaborate on what you'll be able to extend from the original image shifting puzzler, but we'll leave that up to developers' imaginations. You can get the full rub and all downloads at the source, just dial down that enthusiasm a little -- the wait for a few more features continues.
