The University of Miami baseball team finally began its season Saturday, posting a 5-4 victory against Rutgers at Mark Light Field.
Dale Carey scored the winning run on a single by catcher Garrett Kennedy and fielding error by left fielder Vinny Zarrillo with one out in the bottom of the ninth after the Canes gave up three runs in the top of the inning for a 4-4 tie.
UM first baseman David Thompson, who also plays on the Hurricanes football team, drove in two runs as the Canes won the first game of a doubleheader. The opener was originally scheduled for Friday night but was postponed because of rain.
UM left-hander AJ Salcines got the victory despite allowing three runs (two earned) in the ninth.
Game 2 was scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
