NEWPORT, N.H. (AP) ? Newt Gingrich is on the defensive in New Hampshire, fielding questions about a remark on blacks and food stamps as well as his work for Freddie Mac.
The head of the NAACP on Friday issued a statement calling the former House speaker's remarks inaccurate and divisive. Gingrich said Thursday he would speak to the group and urge them to demand "paychecks instead of food stamps." Gingrich said his words had been distorted and called the criticism "nuts."
Gingrich also faced fresh questions about his work for Freddie Mac. He said he is "perfectly happy" to make his contracts with mortgage giant public but the decision must be made by lawyers for the Center for Health Transformation, which he founded.
There was no immediate comment from the Atlanta-based center.
